PREVENTING CARJACKING
Basic tips to prevent carjacking
The Basics
- Keep you doors and windows locked at all times, even if you're parked in your own driveway.
- Always park your car in a well lit area.
- Have the key in your hand when approaching your vehicle. You will be able to enter quickly. Always look around before you put yourself into a position where you can be trapped.
- Walk as fast as possible when going to and from the car. Thieves always look for slow walkers.
- Always be aware of your surroundings. Look behind where you are walking.
- Never, under any circumstances, roll down the window or open the door to talk to someone. A window cannot stop a bullet, but it can stop hands and knives.
- Get a tracking device. It can get your car back before it is chopped up and it can also lower your insurance rates with some agencies.
What if you see a stranded motorist?
Don't stop to help. It's tough to ignore someone in trouble, but you don't know if they're setting you up for a robbery. You can serve both your interests by contacting police or a mechanic at a gas station instead.
At a light
Some carjackers will take advantage of the fact you're trapped at a red and use that moment to confront you. Stay at least 1 1/2 car lenghts behind the car in front of you. Like this, you can make a quick escape if/when necessary.
What if they hit you?
If you're hit from behind, remain in your vehicle, keep your doors and windows locked and call police if necessary. Put on your emergency flashers and if you need to talk to the other driver, do it through a closed window. You can also get the other car's licence plate number and drive to the nearest police station or well lit area. Try to pick a spot where lots of people are present.
Use your cell phone
It's your first and fastest way to ask for help.
What if it happens anyway?
Please do not panic!! Give up your car. Do not resist, do not argue, do not fight. Hand over the keys and make no sudden moves. Vehicles can be replaced; your life cannot. Call the police immediately.
Remember: Common sense will always be your best defense
