2006 / Other statistics
- Canada's murder rate was down 10% in 2006 comparing to 2005.
- The biggest drop in homicides rates was in Ontario, where there werw 23 fewer homicides in 2006, comparing to 2005.
- Québec recorded its lowest murder rate in 40 years (1.2% per 100,000 people).
- Saskatchewan had the highest overall crime rate of all provinces (for the ninth year in a row) - 40 homicides reported by Police.
- Rate of youth aged 12 to 17 accused of homicide was at its highest point since 1961.
- A total of 84 young people were accused of murder, a dozen more than in 2005.
- Of the 605 murders reported in 2006 - down from 663 in 2005, 190 were committed with a firearm, 33 fewer than in 2005.
- 108 people were killed with a handgun, or more than half of the 190 victims killed by a firearm.
- Among Canada's largest cities, Toronto was the one with highest number of shooting deaths: 34.
- Gang related murders accounted for about one in every 6 homicides. Three-quarters of those murders were committed with a firearm, usually a handgun.
- Expenditures on policing in Canada in 2006 totaled $9.9 billion (a 4.4% increase over 2005). This amount breaks down to $303 per Canadian citizen.
- Police solved 72% of all violent crimes.
