INFORMATION ON FRAUD

- Your Social Insurance Number (SIN) is the most important key to proving your identity.  Be cautious about how and with whom you share this information.

- Someone using your identification to open a bank account is an example of identity fraud.  "Identity fraud happens when someone uses an individual's personal information to conduct activities in that individual's name".  Be aware of some of the methods that can be used to steal your identity.

- If you receive an email from your financial institution, asking you to click on a certain link and provide your username and password, report the incident immediately to your financial institution.  This type of email is not legitimate.  Do not reply;  instead, forward the email to your financial institution.

- To protect your PIN at an ATM or point-of-sale terminal, use your hand or body to protect and shield it.  Never let your card out of your sight.  Once you have completed our banking transaction, take your card and transaction record with you.  Be aware of your surroundings.  Leave the location if you feel uncomfortable.  Never disclose your PIN to anyone.
