THEFTS AT PEARSON AIRPORT - BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS

7/24/2008 10:55 AM

Members of the Peel Regional Police Airport Division, Criminal Investigation Bureau, are reminding members of the public who use Pearson International Airport to be alert to their surrounding. Investigators have detected an increase in distraction style thefts.

In recent months, seven distraction thieves have been arrested at Pearson International Airport and investigations are continuing on several other thefts. Distraction style thefts have thieves working in groups of two or three. One of the suspects will approach the victim, as the victim is occupied with using a telephone, loading bags, renting a car, checking in, or simply relaxing in a café. While the first suspect interacts with the victim, the other suspect(s) will steal the victim’s property.

The thieves will target briefcases, luggage, electronics (laptops, i-pods, PDA’s ), passports and any other item that a victim may lose sight of.

Passengers travelling through Pearson Airport are reminded to carry their valuables and bags with them at all times and to be alert if approached by any strangers. You may have been targeted for distraction by thieves. Be especially alert while checking-in, or when loading bags in or out of vehicles.

After an extensive investigation by members of the Peel Regional Police Central Robbery Bureau, a man has been charged in connection with a rash of robberies which took place between October and December 2007, in the Greater Toronto Area.

The offences began on October 20, 2007, at about 6:30 a.m., when the suspect disguised himself and entered a Petro Canada Gas Station located at 10561 Heart Lake Road in Brampton. The suspect was in possession of a gun and made off with a quantity of cash.

The suspect continued his crime spree when, on October 26, 2007, he committed three armed robberies at two separate TD Canada Trust banks located at 327 Burnamthorpe Road and 1440 Royal York Road in Toronto. He targeted a Pizza Pizza located at 7070 McLaughlin Road in Mississauga, later the same night. The suspect made off with cash from all but the Royal York Road location.

On the 30th of October 2007, at about 3:10 p.m., the suspect again disguised himself, armed himself with a gun, and entered the TD Canada Trust located at 1077 North Service Road in Mississauga. After making a demand for money, the suspect made off with cash from the tills.

On December 7, 2007, at about 4:20 p.m., the suspect entered the Bank of Nova Scotia located at 5385 Lakeshore Road East in Burlington. After arming himself with a gun and disguising his face, the suspect demanded cash, and then fled the scene.

On Wednesday, July 23, 2008, the suspect, Kyon FERRIL, an 18 year old male of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with 26 counts of varying offences including several counts of Robbery, Use Imitation Firearm, Disguise with Intent, and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime.

USE YOUR HELMET. PREVENT INJURIES

7/23/2008 7:09 PM

More than ten thousand low-income kids will now be able to play safe when participating in sport and recreation activities requiring helmets, including: biking, rollerblading and skateboarding.

As part of Ontario's Injury Prevention Strategy, an investment of
$500,000 is encouraging the use of helmets among children and youth, and providing helmets to kids in Ontario who could not otherwise afford them.

Today's announcement is part of a larger $1.2 million investment, through which the Ministry of Health Promotion has partnered with the ThinkFirst Foundation of Canada to deliver the Ontario Safe Sport Helmet Initiative.

Over the next few months ThinkFirst in collaboration with participating Public Health Units and local community partners across Ontario will be distributing $25 helmet coupons that will go towards the purchase of sport helmets for kids in low-income communities, so that more kids will have equal access to participate safely in the sports that require helmets.

Other components of this initiative include the youth-oriented "Buckle Your Bucket" public education campaign to enhance helmet safety awareness, and correct use and fitting of helmets; as well as a distribution of activity-specific helmets to community and recreation organizations for ongoing use in their programs.

    QUOTES

"Our Government is committed to reducing the frequency, severity and impact of injuries in Ontario," said Health Promotion Minister Margarett Best. "Providing coupons for low-income kids to access helmets ensures that all Ontarians have the opportunity to participate safely in sport and recreational activities."

"Skateboarding, cycling and rollerblading are excellent summer activities for children and youth - to keep them healthy and make them fit. However, activities like these carry some risks, especially the risk of a head injury," said Dr. Charles H. Tator, Founder & Past President, ThinkFirst. "ThinkFirst teaches kids to use their brain to protect themselves, and wearing a helmet is one of the proven ways to protect that brain."

"This program is helping public health units across Ontario reduce barriers to safe physical activity by providing helmets to kids who most need them", said Dr. David McKeown, Medical Officer of Health for the City of Toronto. "It is also helping us to educate kids and parents about the importance of using the right safety gear when involved in sport and recreation activities."

    QUICK FACTS

    -   Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for children and youth in Canada.
    -   Approximately 5,500 helmets have already been distributed through this initiative to 187 community organizations across Ontario for ongoing use in their sport and recreation programs.
    -   Children under the age of 15 have the highest injury and death rates associated with cycling activities.
    -   An e-viral campaign will be deployed to help spread the word to "Buckle Your Bucket" to all youth across Ontario via e-mail and other web applications.

NEW ONTARIO CHILD BENEFIT

7/23/2008 7:02 PM

This week, about 465,000 families with 960,000 children are receiving the first monthly Ontario Child Benefit payments.

The new monthly payments that equal up to $600 this year, growing to up to $1,100 a year by 2011, will help all eligible low-income families with the cost of raising their children.  When fully implemented in 2011, the Ontario Child Benefit will reach nearly 1.3 million children living in 600,000 low-income families, bringing the government's total investment to $2.1 billion.

Families with an annual income of $20,000 or less will receive the full benefit for each child, while families earning more may also be eligible based on the number of children under 18 and the family net income.

The Ontario Child Benefit is a major reform to the way assistance is provided to low-income families because children can qualify whether their parents are working or not. This means that people can move off welfare without worrying about losing support for their kids.

The Ontario Child Benefit is the cornerstone of the McGuinty government's commitment to develop a poverty reduction strategy that will expand opportunities for children and low-income families so they can reach their full potential and contribute to a strong economy.

    QUOTES

"We're now making it a little easier for all low-income families to
provide for their children every month," said Children and Youth Services Minister Deb Matthews. "For a family with two children, the OCB could mean an extra $100 worth of nutritious groceries. We know this is the right thing to do for our families - and it's also the smart thing to do for our economy."

"To get the Ontario Child Benefit it's crucial that low-income families fill out their tax returns," said Toronto Centre MPP, George Smitherman. "The Ontario Child Benefit will reduce barriers faced by families with children trying to leave welfare for work," said Gail Nyberg, executive director of Toronto's Daily Bread Food Bank (http://www.dailybread.ca/Open in a new window). "At the same time it will help reduce child poverty and hunger."
