Safety Tips

Safeguard your home

Here are some tips:

1) Replace your smoke alarms every 5 years.  Even with proper maintenance, which includes battery changes, cleaning, etc., all smoke alarms are no longer guaranteed to function properly after 5 years.  Replace your old smoke alarm.

2) There are 2 types of sensors for smoke alarms:  ionization and photoelectric.  You need both types in your home.  Ionization smoke alarms respond to fast-flaming fires.  Photoelectric respond to slow, smoldering fires.  Install a smoke alarm outside each sleeping are and on each level of your home.

3) Regular cleaning and replacing of dryer ducting is highly recommended.  Lint build-up can be a fire hazard.  Do not use vinyl ducting for clothes dryer venting.

4) Be sure to inspect your chimney regularly.  Cleaning it may reduce the risk of having a chimney fire.

5) Have an emergency escape plan that each family member is aware of and practise it.

6) Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms should be placed on every level of your home.  CO is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas, but it can be deadly.

7) You should have fire extinghishers in your home.  Learn how to use them and make sure they are fully charged by checking the gauge regularly.

8) Replace the batteries in your smoke alarm and CO alarm every year.  As an easy reminder, replace your batteries when you turn back your clocks for daylight savings.  Test the batteries once a month (by pushing the button on the unit).

9) Never remove the battery of your smoke alarms for any reason.

10) Know your fire department's phone number.

11) Keep matches and lighters out of children's reach.

12) Don't overload the electrical outlets.

13) Never barbecue inside.

14) Never leave grease cooking unattended.  Clean grease from burner pans and stove top regularly.

Install Smoke Alarms: It's the Law! "The Ontario Fire Code requires that every home have working smoke alarms on each storey as well as outside all sleeping areas." Do you have yours installed? According to the Office of the Fire Marshall/Ontario, "Failure to comply with the Fire Code smoke alarm requirements could result in a ticket for $235 or a fine of up to $50,000 for individuals or $100,000 for corporations".
